Originally designed to compete with the commercial success of the Willys Jeep post world war 2 the Land Rover was the brainchild of Rover's chief designer Maurice Wilks. Designed with predominantly agricultural use in mind. Originally intended to have a centre steering position and PTO take off in an attempt to create a more practical and usable vehicle than the hugely successful Ferguson Tractor. Only intended to be in production for 2-3 years to generate cashflow until Rover could build its sales of luxury vehicles back up after the war.
The first models rolled off the production line in Land Rover's shadow factory in Solihul (its main factory had been bombed during the war) with a more conventional right hand drive layout as well as a 1.6 litre petrol engine that was quickly replaced with a 2 litre engine as production ran. A huge success with over 200,000 vehicles being produced before the introduction of the series 2 in 1958.
First registered August 1949 this early example has been owned by the current keeper for 30 years! Showing just 3 previous keepers and presented in what appears to be very original condition. Re-comissioned by a Land Rover specialist in the Scottish borders around 10 years ago and used mainly for the owner to get around his Northumberland farm.
